Chapter 19 Summary

The group arrives at an isolated Muffler shop, operated by Wino's uncle. They soon learn that he is a drug smuggler. The "hole" is an underground tunnel that is used to "move product" (180). The girls recognize it from a movie, a dirt tunnel from The Great Escape. "It runs over half a mile. Right across the border. Right under the noses of the migra. It comes up in a curtain-and-drapery-stitching company on the other side" (181). The girls, along with Atomiko, walk through the tunnel and wait for the associates on the other side. After a long wait, two men open the tunnel. They are moved to the back of a truck and are driven for a while in the dark. After quite some time, they are removed from the truck and are left in a parking lot, between two churches. They are in San Diego.

They walk and find a playground where Vampi and Atomiko play on the swings. They delight in the clean and well-lit public bathrooms. "I love America," Nayeli sighed. "The policemen ride bikes and wear shorts" (187). Atomiko's biggest desire is to see Disneyland and they cry over Tacho. Atomiko sees a “Jack in the Box” and they go there to eat. Nayeli falters over calling Matt and realizes she only has pesos and no American coins for the pay phone.

Chapter 20 Summary

The narrator provides background information about May Johnston, Missionary Matt's mom. Matt had moved to San Francisco and still sends money home periodically. The section ends with the abrupt death of May Johnston and switches to Matt's point of view. His reminiscing of his time on Clairemont St. was filled with angst and depression, desperately wanting to get out of there and rescue his mother too. While in a depressed daze, the phone rings; it is the girls from Tres Camarones. He meets them in a parking lot and brings them back to his place. Although he is embarrassed by the dilapidated condition of his mother’s house, they all believe he lives in a palace. They watch MTV and drink beer.

Chapter 21 Summary

The story shifts to Tacho. He is in a makeshift interrogation room, and witnesses a half-hearted apology for his wrongful arrest and "harm [he]...accidentally suffered when resisting arrest" (200).

They ask him if he will file a complaint and he says "no", but that he will be returning to cross the border again next week. He is returned back to Tijuana and calls Irma who tells him that Nayeli and the girls are making it back to Matt's house in San Diego.

Tacho visits a gay bar and meets Rigoberto, a handsome middle-aged man. Rigo says he is a doctor and could tend to his swollen lip and eye (injuries he is sustained from his arrest). Tacho drinks too much, and Rigo drives him to his place, in his BMW. Tacho falls asleep in the car. When they arrive at Rigo's house, Tacho asks to have a shower and Rigo agrees.

Chapters 19-21 Analysis

This section has the warriors receiving success, which undoubtedly lifts their spirits. The girls and Atomiko successfully make it across the border via the secret, underground tunnel and enjoy their first tastes of American junk food. San Diego is paradisiac to them; there are police officers on bicycles and the public bathrooms are well lit and clean. Fortune smiles on them again when they are able to contact Matt and he helps them. Tacho is also very lucky as he receives kindness from a wealthy stranger. They are made to feel human again, which has not been there experience over the last few days. They have been ashamed and physically harmed.

It is important to note the contrast of Matt’s situation with the Tres Camarones crew. His mother just passed, and he has returned to her rundown home, forced to take care of things. To him, things could not get much worse. Yet, when he brings the group back to his place they marvel at the luxuries he has. The good can be found in the most unlikely places and beauty is all in the eye of the beholder.
